CHAPTER TWENTY

Donovan braced himself for Audrey’s reaction. She was the first person from his past that he’d had to confront face to face. The first person from his previous life to whom he’d admitted his deepest secret.

With her left arm Audrey swung an open hand toward Donovan’s cheek. Donovan, reacting even faster, grabbed her wrist mid-flight and held on as she expended her fury.

“Let me go!” Audrey cried out as she squirmed to free herself.

“Only if you promise to talk—not hit,” Donovan said calmly. He knew she probably had the right to be angry, though he wasn’t sure what she might be most angry about—that he’d deserted them all—or that she’d tried to seduce him and he’d turned her down.

Audrey massaged her wrist after Donovan released her. “You bastard, you had that coming.”

“Did I?” Donovan needed to select his words carefully, he needed to let her calm down and do the talking. He recognized that this might be most important conversation of his life.

“I can’t believe you faked your death,” Audrey said, visibly upset. “You let the entire world—including those closest to you, think you were dead. Then what? You simply run off to some deserted tropical island. What do you think you accomplished?”

Donovan said nothing as he thought back to the night she’d showed up at his hotel room on some flimsy pretense that there were some papers for him to sign. For several months after Meredith’s death he’d been living in various hotels. He felt isolated and lonely in his own house, plus the protesters and reporters were always gathered outside. Audrey had come over late and knocked at the door to his suite. He’d been surprised at her arrival and as he looked at the papers she’d brought, he realized there was no real reason his signature couldn’t wait until morning. When he gazed up at her, the seductive expression on her face told him she was there for something else. He finished signing the papers and was putting them back in the folder when she moved in and closed the distance between them. She’d openly asked him if he wanted her—if so, she’d stay the night. He knew she was seeing Henry. Though her affair with Henry was supposed to be hush-hush, it was really not a closely held secret. Donovan had been appalled by her arrogance; that she had essentially barged in on him with the intent of screwing him. He was even angrier that she would do that to Henry. In retrospect, he might have handled it a little better than he did. But he’d gripped her by the upper arm and escorted her firmly toward the hallway. Without a word, he’d shoved her and closed the door.

“You had the world in the palm of your hand. Rich, famous, and talented—I don’t get it? Why?”

“You remember the death threats, the private security that I had to employ to make sure no one close to me became another kidnapping target. There were almost daily threats to the people around me.
